About Our Pastor...

Pictured above is the Saint John’s Missionary Baptist Church First Family: Pastor Tyrone E. Turner Sr., Mrs. Beverly M. Turner, and their son Tyrone Jr., ("T.J.").

Pastor Tyrone E. Turner, Sr., was born in Lawton, Okla., on 21 March 1963.  He is the son of Mr. Rogers Turner, Sr., and the Late Sis. Opal Turner.  Pastor Turner is the third in the family of four boys.  He is married to the former Miss Beverly Marie Gordon of Ardmore, Okla.; and they have one child, Tyrone, Jr.

Pastor Turner received his early education in the Lawton Public Schools System. He completed his undergraduate studies at Cameron University of Lawton, Okla., and was awarded his Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education in May of 1985. He served in the teaching profession throughout the state of Oklahoma for 11 years.  And on 7 May 2000, he completed Phase I of a three-phase course of theological studies at the Southern Bible Institute in Dallas, Tex.  In May 2002, he completed the requirements for graduate studies at American Christian College & Seminary of Oklahoma City, Okla., and was awarded his Master’s Degree in theology with the highest honors. Additionally, he recently completed the Pastors’ Certification Course, which qualifies him to teach theology at the district, state, and national levels.

After a long, distinguished career as a minister that began in 1986, in May of 1997, the Reverend Tyrone E. Turner was called to lead St. John’s.  Church projects that have been successfully completed under his leadership include, but are not limited to, remodeling the sanctuary vestibule, rewiring and installing a new speaker system in the sanctuary, purchasing five lots of land in preparation for extending the sanctuary and expanding the parking lot, purchasing two 15-passenger van, hiring additional staff personnel, and developing a Sunday school class designed specifically for new members, establishing a four-camera observation system, and installing an automatic door-release system.  Most recently, our pastor has led us to pay off Bond #1 and Bond #2 of the Family Life Center, relieving the church of much debt.

Organizations that have been established under Pastor Turner’s guidance are the St. John’s Conquerors for Christ Drill Team, God’s Angels, the Royal Priesthood, and the Mothers’ Board.  He also authored the book titled “Rebuilding Broken Walls.” And he received and implemented a vision from God that resulted in the first Equipping Pastors & Laymen’s Conference.

Pastor Turner is frequently called upon to lead evangelistic revivals. And he is an active supporter and member of the Lawton Ministerial Alliance, the Western District Baptist Association, and the Oklahoma State Baptist Association. Further, he is a mentor in the Swinney Elementary School’s Help One Student To Succeed (H.O.S.T.S.) program, a member of the board of directors for the Comanche County Juvenile Bureau, a member of the board of directors for the United Way of Lawton/Fort Sill, and a member of Drug Court.

Mrs. Turner has a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration with a minor in administrative management from Langston University of Langston, Okla.  She is employed with the Guthrie Job Corps Center as a transitional career-development advisor.  The first lady demonstrates her dedication to the Lord in her work as an adult women Sunday school teacher, as a circle #2 Women’s Mission Union teacher, and as co-chairperson of the Deaconesses & Ministers’ Wives Ministry.  She also works with the Battered Women’s Shelter. And she is a member of the Lawton Area Reading Council (LARC) and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Tyrone E. Turner, Jr., is a 14-year-old,  eigth-grade student and plays football, soccer, baseball, and basketball; and he enjoys exercising his God-given talent to play the drums for St. John’s Church Choirs.
